Superposition

The turnaround began with two surgical interventions — a wind operation and a gelding — that Ed Dunlop's Newmarket yard hoped would unlock what the horse had always suggested he was capable of. The early signs were good. His first career win came at Southwell in late March 2025, and Dunlop was struck by the manner of it: carrying a four-year-old's weight and winning impressively, moving with the quality of a horse who had finally found his groove again. That physical transformation matters. A horse who moves well and stays sound is one who can build a career, rather than one you're always nursing.

Since then, the progress has been real. He won again at Newmarket just this week — the home track for the Dunlop yard — and his recent form shows a horse who has been knocking on the door fairly consistently. Three wins and six placed efforts from 18 races overall means he wins roughly 1 in every 6 races across his career, which is a solid return. Dunlop has suggested he looks to have found a bit of extra speed too, which is the kind of detail that often signals there is more to come.

The one challenge Superposition faces is that his best form has come just below the top level. He has run six times in Class 2 company — among the best races in Britain — without winning any of them. That is the ceiling he has not yet broken through, but with Dunlop's yard in strong form this season (36 winners already), and a horse who appears to be improving, the question is whether that ceiling might yet give way. Pontefract is next, and if the progress continues, those Class 2 races may start to look more like opportunities than obstacles.
