The most recent victory came at Ayr in April 2025, around a year ago, making it the most recent landmark in a career that started finding its feet relatively late. The first win arrived at Market Rasen in May 2024, so Summergrounds has packed three wins into a fairly tight window, which tells you the horse found a level that suited it and made the most of it. Both of those wins came in Class 5 company — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing — where Summergrounds has won 2 from 11 races, or roughly 1 in every 5 or 6, which is a perfectly respectable return.

One thing the form book makes clear is that Summergrounds genuinely appreciates some cut in the ground. On slightly soft going — wet enough to take the jar out, soft enough to reward a horse that stays well — it has won 2 from 9 races, a 22% win rate, or just over 1 in every 4. That is meaningfully better than its overall record, and it is the kind of detail that matters when you are trying to pick the right day to run a horse.

Nicky Richards trains Summergrounds from his yard at Greystoke in Cumbria, and with 39 winners already sent out this season, this is clearly a stable in good form. Danny McMenamin has been in the saddle for 11 of Summergrounds' races and they have won once together — not a sparkling partnership on paper, but McMenamin knows this horse well by now.

Recent form reads as five runs without a win, with three consecutive second-place finishes in the middle of that sequence. That is the frustrating side of a horse like Summergrounds: it is competitive enough to keep finishing second, just not quite finding the extra gear to get its nose in front. Having raced just yesterday, it is clearly still in the thick of things.
