What keeps the door open is the yard behind it. Nigel Tinkler, based in Langton in North Yorkshire, has sent out 37 winners already this season — that is a genuinely productive operation, not one that throws horses at races without a plan. Tinkler has a reputation for placing horses shrewdly and knowing when the right opportunity will come. The fact that Stromness raced as recently as yesterday suggests the team sees something worth persisting with, even if the public evidence has not caught up yet.

That said, five blank runs is a real milestone of struggle. Most horses find a way to sneak into at least one placing somewhere along the way, so a clean sheet of zeroes is notable — and not in a good way. Stromness will need to find improvement soon, because patience in racing, however well-intentioned, is rarely unlimited.
