The recent form makes for equally tough reading. Finishing sixth, ninth, ninth, ninth, seventh, and eighth across its last six outings, Stoneacre has not threatened the front of a race in some time. Those finishing positions are not near-misses — they are mid-to-back-of-field efforts that suggest the horse is simply finding its level, which unfortunately appears to be somewhere behind the horses it lines up against.
Jockey Dale Swift has stuck with it loyally, partnering Stoneacre in five of its thirteen races without a win to show for it. That kind of loyalty from a jockey says something — riders do not tend to keep coming back to horses they find hopeless to handle — but results-wise, the partnership has yet to click. The yard itself, run by Scott Dixon out of Rolleston in Nottinghamshire, is clearly capable: 35 winners sent out this season is a solid, productive tally, which makes Stoneacre something of an outlier. Dixon knows how to get horses winning. This one just has not cooperated yet.
Whether it ever does is the genuine open question. Stoneacre is still active — raced as recently as today — so the the yard have not given up. At six, it is not a young horse still finding its feet, but it is not finished either. For now, it remains one of racing's more persistent puzzles: a horse that keeps turning up, keeps trying, and keeps leaving people wondering if today might finally be the day.
