What works in Stepanov's favour is who is doing the building. Edward Bethell operates one of the most productive yards in the north of England, based out of Middleham in North Yorkshire — a training town with a long and serious reputation for producing competitive racehorses. This season alone, Bethell's team has sent out 62 winners, which is a genuinely impressive output and a sign of a yard operating at full tilt. When a trainer is winning at that volume, it means horses are being placed smartly, kept fit, and brought to their races in good order. Stepanov may not have broken through yet, but it is hard to imagine the team giving up on a young horse after just four runs.
Having raced just yesterday, Stepanov is very much an active work in progress. The first win could come quickly, or it might take a few more outings to find the right spot — but with a busy, confident yard behind it and two placed efforts already on the board, this is a horse worth keeping an eye on.
