That single run is almost meaningless on its own, though. Two-year-olds are essentially learning on the job in their first few races, and a fifth-place finish tells you very little beyond the fact that the horse has seen a racecourse. What matters more at this stage is who is doing the teaching.
Kevin Ryan's yard at Hambleton in North Yorkshire is one of the most productive operations in Britain right now, having sent out 45 winners already this season. That kind of output means Ryan knows how to place a horse and when to be patient with a young one. Statten Island is very much at the start of its story, and with a trainer firing on all cylinders behind it, there is every reason to watch how this one develops over the coming months.
