Squealer

His calling card is York. That's where his career began with a first win back in September 2022, and that's where he delivered his finest hour on 28 June 2025, winning one of the top races in Britain — a Class 2 — at the course that overlooks the old Terry's Chocolate Factory, where the owners have an apartment with a direct view of the track. It doesn't get much more personal than that. Tinkler has since noted that the horse he beat that day, JM Jungle, has gone on to win again, which makes the form look even better in hindsight.

What makes Squealer worth understanding is the way he wins. Jockey Rowan Scott, who has ridden him in 22 of his 27 races and won 4 of them — roughly 1 in every 5 together — describes him as having "an electric turn of foot." The key is getting him to switch off early and settle, because when he does, the finishing kick can be devastating. It's a fine line, and it hasn't always worked: his last six results read 9th, 6th, 16th, 11th, 8th, 12th, a run of form that tells you the handicapper has adjusted his weights and some unlucky starting positions haven't helped. Tinkler is candid about that — the draw has cost him, and the ratings have caught up with him a bit.

The other thing that defines Squealer is his love of fast, dry ground. On normal-to-firm conditions, he's won 4 races from 15 — that's a 27% win rate, more than 1 in every 4, which is a serious record. On softer surfaces he simply hasn't clicked, and Tinkler won't be going to Bahrain again after a difficult trip there last year. The plan is to return to York for the final meeting of the season, and if the ground comes up right, there is every reason to think this horse still has a big performance in him. He's won there before, the team love the place, and on quick ground over a short trip, Squealer is genuinely dangerous.
