Doncaster in the wet is where Spycatcher becomes something special. He has won 2 of his 4 races there, both in Class 1 company, and his trainer Karl Burke makes no secret of why: the horse ploughs through muddy, heavy ground in a way that leaves rivals struggling. After Spycatcher's win at Doncaster in November 2025 — watched by Burke from Germany — the trainer was direct about what he'd just seen: on that ground, he said, Spycatcher is a Group 1 horse. That is the very highest level of the sport, anywhere in the world. Burke has even spoken openly about rolling the dice on a top-tier race if the ground comes up right.

What makes Spycatcher particularly compelling is the combination of class and character. Burke describes him as a horse who loves to run fresh — meaning he performs best when he hasn't raced too recently — and he notes that the horse has had his share of physical niggles over the years. Before his November win, the plan was apparently to put him away for the season. Then the ground turned soft, Spycatcher bounced out of his previous run in great shape, and the team changed their minds. He won comfortably. That kind of opportunism, knowing exactly when your horse is ready and what conditions he needs, is what separates good training from great training.

Burke's yard has sent out 140 winners this season alone, which is a remarkable volume, so Spycatcher is operating within a genuinely elite operation. Clifford Lee, who rides him most often, has won 2 of their 15 races together — roughly 1 in every 7 or 8, which is a reasonable return at the top level.
