The recent form makes for interesting reading. That third-place finish a few runs back shows there is ability here — Sporty Socks has been competitive — but the pattern of 7-3-5-6-2-5 tells a slightly mixed story. The second place is genuinely encouraging, suggesting the horse can get close to winning. The seventh and sixth, though, are the kind of results that raise questions about consistency.

William Stone's yard has sent out 10 winners already this season, so this is not an operation that struggles to get horses to win — which makes Sporty Socks something of an outlier within a yard that clearly knows how to produce results. Racing most often at Class 6, the lowest tier of British racing, Sporty Socks has gone without a win in all four races at that level. That is worth noting, because Class 6 is essentially the entry point — the races designed to give horses like this every chance of winning. Going winless at that level after four attempts is a puzzle the team at West Wickham will be keen to solve. Having raced just one day ago, the horse is clearly fit and active, and another chance will come around quickly.
