That second place is the one glimmer — proof it can still get competitive — but the wider trend is of a horse struggling to rediscover the form that brought those two spring victories.

Horses that need time and ground to wind up often come into their own at those distances, and this may be where its best chances lie. At Class 4 level, a solid mid-tier grade, it has won 1 from 5, which is 20% — wins 1 in every 5 races at that level — and that is the kind of number that justifies keeping it there rather than stepping it up.

Trained by James Owen out of Newmarket, Sportingsilvermine sits in a busy, productive yard that has sent out 204 winners this season alone — so the operation clearly knows how to get horses winning. Regular rider J M Sheridan has partnered it eight times without a win, though it would be unfair to read too much into that given the horse's overall record. Sportingsilvermine raced just one day ago, so it is firmly in the middle of its campaign. Whether another win is coming is hard to say — but at 34 races and still active, this horse is nothing if not persistent.
