The best Sponsor has managed so far is a third-place finish, which at least shows the ability to compete and pick up a cheque. The more recent form, though, tells a trickier tale — a fourth, then a ninth in the most recent outing just a day ago, suggesting the horse may still be working out what racing is all about. That kind of inconsistency is not unusual in young horses, but it does mean Sponsor needs to find some improvement if it is going to start troubling the winners' enclosure.
On the plus side, the surroundings are encouraging. Sponsor is trained by Brian Meehan at Manton in Wiltshire, one of the more respected yards in the south of England. Meehan's team has sent out 13 winners already this season, which tells you this is a yard that knows how to get horses ready to perform. Being trained somewhere with that kind of firepower is no small thing — it means Sponsor has every resource available to make the step forward it needs.
