The horse broke its duck at Great Yarmouth on 5 August, securing its maiden win two weeks ago. Since then, things have been tighter: a third-place finish, then a second, then another third, most recently, just a day ago. It is still racing regularly and clearly sound, but that opening victory has not led to an immediate winning streak. For a young horse, though, finishing in the frame three times out of three since the breakthrough suggests Speed of Sound knows how to handle itself under pressure and is not dropping off in class.
R Spencer, who trains from Newmarket in Suffolk, sent out 30 winners this season — a yard in good form. Speed of Sound is getting regular opportunities and racing frequently, which is exactly what a young horse needs to develop. Whether the horse can get back to the winner's enclosure soon enough to build real momentum will shape what comes next, but the foundations are solid: one win from four races, and none of those races were disasters.
