The single most important thing to understand about Special Rate is what happens when the ground gets wet. On soft or muddy conditions, this horse has won 4 of just 7 races — a remarkable 57% win rate, or more than 1 in every 2. That is not luck; that is a genuine preference, and when rain arrives before a race, Special Rate immediately becomes far more interesting than its overall record suggests.

There is also a course to watch. At Kelso, a tight and testing track in the Scottish Borders, Special Rate has won 2 of its 4 visits — winning exactly half the time it shows up there. For a horse competing mainly at Class 3 level, which sits just below the very top tier of British racing, that kind of consistency at a single track is genuinely rare. Kelso rewards horses that handle its sharp bends and undulations, and Special Rate has shown it understands the place.

The awkward part is that the last win came at Kelso in February 2024 — now 26 months ago — and the six races since have brought a second place, two thirds, a fourth, and a sixth. The most recent run was just yesterday, so this is a horse actively competing without finding the winner's enclosure. Regular jockey Sean Quinlan, who has partnered Special Rate eight times, is still waiting for a first win together. Trainer Hugh Burns, based up in Northumberland at Alnwick, has sent out just two winners so far this season, so the yard is not exactly in a purple patch right now.

Yet nothing about Special Rate's form screams decline. The placings are consistent, the competition is respectable, and a wet day at Kelso would immediately reopen the conversation. Sometimes a horse is simply waiting for conditions to align — and this one has shown, more than once, exactly what it can do when they do.
