That gap tells you something: when Spaceport is given the right conditions, it can be competitive. The puzzle is putting all the pieces together often enough to matter.

The horse is trained by Tom Lacey at his yard in Woolhope, Herefordshire, and the operation is having a solid season — 37 winners sent out so far, which is a sign of a functioning, active stable. Jockey Lewis Edmunds has the longest-running partnership with Spaceport, riding it in 9 of its 18 races and winning once together, a rate of 11% — exactly in line with the horse's overall average, which suggests neither is holding the other back. Most of Spaceport's races have come at Class 4 level, one step below the mid-tier of British racing, and it has won 1 from 6 at that grade — meaning it competes honestly without dominating.

Raced just yesterday, Spaceport is very much an active runner. It broke through first at Leicester in June 2024, then added that Sandown win the following month, and has been chasing a third ever since. Whether the right race at the right distance eventually unlocks another victory is the open question — but for a horse that goes better when the conditions suit, it only takes one day for the picture to change.
