Trained by Richard Hughes at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, South West is part of a yard that has sent out 60 winners this season — a solid operation with plenty of form on the board. Hughes has got this horse to the winners' enclosure once, and that early success at Catterick Bridge four weeks ago suggests there is something to work with. The fact that South West has placed twice since then, including a third and a second, indicates the horse is at least competitive when it lines up, even if the wins aren't coming regularly. At two years old, there is plenty of time for this horse to develop, and the recent activity — it raced just a day ago — shows it is being actively campaigned rather than shelved. For a young horse still learning the ropes, having one win banked and showing enough ability to place regularly is exactly where things should be.
