South Shore Island

The recent form makes for interesting reading. In its last six races, South Shore Island has finished 2nd, 5th, 7th, 5th, 3rd, and 4th — listed from most recent back. That second place just two runs ago suggests the horse is in decent shape right now, and with a race as recently as yesterday, it is clearly in the thick of an active campaign. The 7th-place finish sandwiched in there is the one blip, but otherwise this is a horse running consistently around the fringes of the places.

Most of its racing has come at Class 5 level — the entry-level tier of British racing, where horses tend to be modest and fields competitive. South Shore Island has run 10 times at that level without winning, which does raise the honest question of whether a win will ever come. But Class 5 is also where margins are tight and traffic and luck play a big role. Five places from 26 races at any level is not nothing.

Regular jockey Robert Havlin has been in the saddle for six of those races together, and the pair are still waiting for a breakthrough — 0 from 6. Havlin is an experienced rider who knows what he is doing, so that record speaks more to the horse's limitations than to any shortage of effort. Trainer Lizzie Quinlan, based at Bolton Mill in Cumbria, has sent out four winners this season from what is a smaller yard operating away from the big racing centres. That takes real work, and South Shore Island, for all its frustrations, is clearly being kept fit and competitive.

Whether the win ever comes is genuinely uncertain. But South Shore Island is racing regularly, finishing close often enough to matter, and clearly being looked after well. Sometimes that is the whole story — and it is worth telling.
