That placed finish is the most interesting number here. Looking at the recent form in reverse order, Solo Eclipse finished second on its second run, then came sixth twice — meaning the horse has actually gone backwards since its best effort. Whether that's down to the type of race, the conditions, or just a horse still finding its feet is hard to say, but it does suggest there's something to work with when everything clicks into place.
What counts in its favour is the team behind it. Trained jointly by David Killahena and Graeme McPherson out of their yard in Stow-on-the-Wold in the Gloucestershire countryside, this is a stable that clearly knows how to get horses ready to win — 18 winners already this season is a serious number for any yard, and it tells you these are people who place their horses well and know what they're doing. A horse in these hands, still at six with relatively few races, isn't necessarily a lost cause. It may simply be waiting for the right opportunity.
Solo Eclipse ran just one day ago, which means this is very much a live, active campaign. The team clearly has plans, and with a horse that has shown it can at least get into the places, the first win may not be as far away as the record suggests.
