Mullins has been open about the fact that Soldier In Milan is still relatively inexperienced and a touch on the green side — meaning he does not always do things in the most polished way. But green and talented are not mutually exclusive, and the trainer clearly believes the rawness will smooth out with time. What already works is the jumping: Mullins has described him as a very good jumper for a horse still learning the ropes, which over longer distances is arguably the most important skill of all. His first win came at Punchestown in May 2025, and he has since added another at Fairyhouse as recently as April 2026, so the progression is real and recent.
What makes the longer-term picture genuinely exciting is the background detail. Before his track career, Soldier In Milan won a point-to-point — a type of amateur race run across open country — by sixteen lengths, which is not a small margin. It is the kind of performance that makes trainers and owners get a little giddy. Mullins has said plainly that he thinks there could be big things ahead, particularly on wet, muddy ground over three miles, which is where staying horses of this type tend to come into their own. He has entries in some of the sport's more significant races, meaning the team has ambitions beyond just collecting modest wins. At seven, and with only five races behind him, Soldier In Milan has a lot of racing still to come — and the signs so far suggest the best of it is still ahead.
