A gap that long is always a talking point when a horse returns, and it makes his next appearance one worth watching closely. His trainer Max Comley, based in Warminster, Wiltshire, has had 18 winners this season, so this is a yard in decent form — and Comley is candid about what went wrong in the meantime. One run at Bath he considers a complete write-off, describing it as a race where the horse essentially stopped, and a fifth-place finish at Newbury looks better in context: he was greener than a freshly cut lawn that day, but was finishing strongly over seven furlongs at the end of it.

The picture Comley paints is of a horse that has simply taken time to grow up. He describes Snooker McCrew as a slow learner — raw, uncoordinated in his younger days, a horse whose frame took a while to catch up with his potential. His mother was a high-quality horse by Pivotal, a stallion associated with speed and class, which hints at a ceiling that his record does not yet reflect. Comley believes he is best over a mile but could stretch to a mile and a quarter, and his numbers back that up: his only win came over that sort of trip, and he has gone 1 from 5 when racing between a mile and a mile and two furlongs — winning roughly 1 in every 5 races at those distances.

Jockey Liam Keniry has ridden him in five of his eight races, winning once together, a rate of around 1 in 5. Comley also believes he is well placed in terms of the weights — meaning the official handicapper may not yet have caught up with what this horse could actually do. For a horse with just one win to his name, that combination of factors — big frame, blue-blooded breeding, sympathetic trainer, and a long absence that might have done him good — makes Snooker McCrew quietly interesting.
