Smallcraftwarning

The most telling detail is the timing. Smallcraftwarning last won at Killarney on 18 July 2025, which means it has now gone 13 months without a victory. In that stretch, it raced six times and finished nowhere in the places in any of them — a run of cards reading 5-10-4-10-2, the kind of sequence that shows a horse drifting further away from its winning form with each outing. Still, the horse remains active; it raced just a day ago, which at least suggests the trainer, John Patrick Ryan at Templemore in County Tipperary, still sees something worth pursuing.

Daniel King has been its regular rider, but even that partnership carries little momentum. The two have been together for eight races, and King has steered Smallcraftwarning to one win — a 12 per cent win rate that barely improves on the horse's overall picture. Ryan's yard has been sending out winners regularly this season (21 to date), so the trainer is clearly capable, but Smallcraftwarning remains one of those horses that, after nearly a decade and more than three dozen races, has never quite made its mark. For a general racing audience, this is the story of the honest journeyman: present, persistent, but unlikely to turn heads.
