That single win came at Wolverhampton on 7 April 2025, over a distance between one mile six furlongs and two miles, which is the longer end of the spectrum and the territory where Barney has always looked most comfortable. Of his 15 races at that kind of trip, he has won 1, which sounds modest until you realise the other distances have produced nothing at all. In other words, if Barney is ever going to win again, it is almost certainly going to be over ground that tests stamina rather than speed.

The concern is that the win is now fourteen months in the past, and the recent form makes for difficult reading: in his last six races the best he has managed is a fifth, with an eighth his most recent effort. Siobhan Rutledge, who has ridden him six times, is still waiting for a first win together, going 0 from 6 in their partnership. That is not a criticism of either horse or rider — some horses simply find winning very hard to do — but it does suggest Barney has not found a race that suits him quite the way Wolverhampton did that April afternoon.

McLoughlin's yard has sent out 10 winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get a horse to the right race at the right time. The challenge now is finding another moment like that one — the right track, the right trip, the right day — for a horse who has shown he can do it, just not very often. Seven places from 26 races tells you Barney is competitive enough to be in the mix regularly. Whether he can convert one of those near-misses into a second win is the question his trainer is still trying to answer.
