Slieve Binnian

The most striking thing about Slieve Binnian is what happens when the ground is right. On normal conditions — not too wet, not too dry — this horse has won 4 of 6 races, a two-thirds success rate that is genuinely unusual. Most horses don't have such a clear preference, but Slieve Binnian does, and when conditions suit, it becomes a very different proposition from the average runner.

Then there's Dundalk. Four wins from just 6 races at that track puts Slieve Binnian in the category of genuine course specialist — the kind of horse that punters circle on the calendar months in advance. Track specialists are real and worth taking seriously; certain horses simply suit certain tracks, whether it's the surface, the layout, or the way the race tends to unfold. Slieve Binnian has figured Dundalk out in a way that has produced consistent rewards. The first career win came there on 11 November 2022, and the track has been good to this horse ever since.

Jockey Ronan Whelan has been along for most of the ride. Together they've won 5 from 17 races — nearly 1 in 3 — which is a productive partnership by any measure. The pair clearly have an understanding, and Whelan's familiarity with how Slieve Binnian ticks is worth something when the pressure is on. The whole operation is run by David Marnane out of Bansha in County Tipperary, a yard that has sent out 16 winners already this season, so there's no shortage of form and confidence behind this horse.

One thing to note going forward: Slieve Binnian hasn't raced in roughly six months, with the last outing — a win at Leopardstown in July 2025 — now almost nine months in the rear-view mirror. Recent form before that break showed two wins in the last six races, so the ability is clearly still there. The question, as always after a long absence, is simply whether the horse comes back as sharp as it left. Given the record, there's plenty of reason to think it will.
