Elliott is one of the most powerful operations in Irish racing, sending out 209 winners this season alone — a number that puts most yards to shame. The fact that a horse like this has been kept in training and given chances speaks to some belief in him behind the scenes. Elliott had flagged early promise before that Punchestown win, suggesting he expected the horse to progress, and he was eventually proved right, even if it took longer than hoped.
The most recent chapter is arguably the most interesting. Slanagaibhgoleir won at Down Royal on Boxing Day 2025, and his last six races read as a mixed but ultimately encouraging picture — a win, a second place, and a spell of quieter runs on either side. He raced just yesterday, which means he is very much a live and active competitor right now rather than a horse in mothballs. The question for any casual observer is whether that Down Royal victory was a sign that he has finally found his level, or simply one of those days when everything clicked. At eight, he is not getting younger, but horses of this age can still be competitive, particularly over longer distances where raw stamina counts for more than sheer speed.
He will never be the most glamorous name on an Elliott racecard — that is a very long word to fit on a racecard, for a start — but there is something appealing about a horse that keeps showing up, keeps finding the odd big effort, and refuses to be written off entirely.
