Since then, across his last six races, the best he has managed is a third place, with a pair of fifth-place finishes mixed in among runs where he hasn't troubled the judge at all. At his age, that kind of winless stretch raises an obvious question about whether another victory is still on the cards — though the fact that he raced just yesterday tells you his team still believes he has something to offer.

He competes almost exclusively at Class 3 level, which is a solid mid-tier standard — not quite the big occasions, but no pushover either. He has won 2 of his 12 races at that level, a win rate of roughly 1 in 6, which is decent given how competitive those fields tend to be. Jeremy Scott trains him out of Brompton Regis in Somerset, and the yard has been in decent form this season with 20 winners on the board. Scott is known for placing his horses patiently, so Sizable Sam turning up regularly at 11 years old suggests there is still a belief that the right day, the right race, and the right conditions could bring him back to the winner's enclosure. Whether that day comes soon is another matter entirely — but he is still out there trying, and at his age, that counts for something.
