Sixpack

Owen bought Sixpack from trainer Johnny Murtagh and had big plans. Early in 2025 he was talking about targeting the better staying races on Saturdays and was even tempted by a switch to jumping. For now, the flat is working just fine. Sixpack won at Roscommon in May 2024, and then again at Doncaster just this week — his most recent race was only a day ago, making him one of the freshest profiles you will read. That Doncaster win is worth dwelling on: jockey Ben Coen, who has partnered Sixpack in nine of his races, described how crucial the trip and the pace were at Roscommon, noting that a steady, honest gallop gave Sixpack room to find his rhythm and come home strongly. The same principles clearly still apply.

The numbers tell you where Sixpack belongs. On normal ground, he wins 2 from 7 races — that is 29%, which is genuinely impressive and means normal conditions unlock the best version of him. Over a mile and three or four furlongs — middle-distance staying trips — he has won 1 from 4, a 25% rate that suggests the longer distances suit him well. Interestingly, in Class 4 races, the level he competes at most often, he has yet to win in four attempts. His wins have come elsewhere, which hints that he may be a horse who punches above his typical level on the right day rather than grinding through his own grade.

Owen's yard has been in exceptional form this season — 204 winners is a serious number, the output of an operation firing on all cylinders. For Sixpack, running out of a yard in that kind of form, on the back of a win just 24 hours ago, the next chapter looks interesting. There may even be a fence in his future, eventually. For now, he is very much a horse to watch on fast, normal ground over a staying trip.
