The encouraging part of the picture is who is doing the training. Kevin Ryan's yard at Hambleton in North Yorkshire has fired out 45 winners already this season, which is the mark of a busy, confident operation that knows how to get horses ready to perform. Ryan has a strong reputation for developing young horses, so Sir Sirius is at least learning his trade in the right hands. Whether yesterday was a learning experience or a sign of things to come, only more races will tell.
At this stage, Sir Sirius is essentially a blank page. One run, no wins, no places — but also no reason to write him off. Plenty of good horses have looked ordinary on debut and then clicked into gear with a run under their belt. The next outing will tell us far more.
