The recent form makes for difficult reading too. Finishing 10th, 12th, and 14th in three of its last outings suggests Sioux Grit has spent most of its racing life towards the back of the field rather than troubling the horses at the front. A fifth-place finish does appear in those last six races, which at least shows the ability to keep closer company when things go right, but that glimmer has not been built upon.
What makes the situation harder to read is the absence. Sioux Grit has not set foot on a racetrack in roughly 22 months — nearly two full years away from competition. That is a significant gap, and whether it signals a physical setback or simply time needed away from racing, it means there is genuine uncertainty about what returns to the track. Horses can come back refreshed after a long break, or they can find that the time away has taken more than it gave.
The trainer, R P Burns, operates out of Collinstown in County Westmeath and has sent out five winners this season, so there is clearly ability within the yard to get horses winning. Whether Sioux Grit can become one of those success stories remains to be seen, but on the evidence of ten races without troubling the judge even once, it would take a significant step forward to change the narrative.
