Single Edition

The best hope of finding one lies over longer trips. At distances of two miles or more, Single Edition has won 1 from 14 races — not a flashy number, but it does at least confirm that stamina is the horse's strongest suit. Those shorter trips haven't worked at all, so the yard at Gowran, under trainer James M Barcoe, would do well to keep the distance up. The yard has shown it knows how to find a winner this season, sending out 7 already, so the skill is clearly there.

Regular partner Sean Flanagan has ridden Single Edition nine times without the two of them finding the winner's enclosure together. That's 0 from 9, which tells its own story. Recent form makes for equally grim reading — a run of 10th, 11th, and 4th in the last three completed races, with two missing results before that. The 4th is at least a place, which matches the pattern of a horse that places more often than it wins — 5 places from 21 races — but placing and winning are very different things, and Single Edition has had a long wait to remind itself of that difference. Raced just yesterday and still active, there's no shortage of opportunities, but on the evidence so far, the next win may require some patience.
