That first win came at Gowran Park on 5th May, just days ago, which means this is a horse right in the middle of its story rather than at the end of it. A debut victory is never a given — plenty of young horses take several runs just to get competitive — so winning first time out puts Shaws Bay in good company from the very start.
The trainer behind it is Johnny Murtagh, operating out of Coolaghknock Glebe in County Kildare. Murtagh is best known as one of the finest jockeys of his generation before he moved into training, and his yard has already sent out 54 winners this season alone — a remarkable number that tells you this is not a small operation doing things quietly. When a yard is firing at that rate, you pay attention to anything coming out of it, and Shaws Bay is one of the more recent additions to that tally.
Two races is a tiny sample, but what we do know is encouraging: a winner at Gowran Park, active right now, and trained by someone who clearly knows how to get horses to the track in form. Worth watching closely as the season develops.
