Shanroe Nelson

The recent form doesn't offer much encouragement either. Looking at the last six races, Shanroe Nelson has finished fifth and third in among a cluster of pulled-up or unplaced efforts, and has not won any of those six runs. The third-place finish is at least a sign that the horse can get competitive on its day, but turning that into a victory has so far proved beyond it. Jockey Ben Harvey has had five of those chances in the saddle and is still waiting for a breakthrough, going winless in all five rides together.

What makes Shanroe Nelson worth keeping an eye on is simply that it raced just one day ago, meaning it is very much in active training and still being campaigned. Karl Thornton's yard has sent out four winners already this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get a horse to the line first — it just hasn't happened yet with this particular horse. At seven years old, time is not exactly on Shanroe Nelson's side, but stranger things have happened than a patient yard eventually finding the right opportunity for a horse that has been knocking on the door.
