Seven Questions

The story behind that Newmarket win is worth telling. Trainer Robert Cowell revealed afterwards that Seven Questions spent the night before the race stabled at the racecourse itself — half a mile from his usual home — because loading him onto a horsebox winds him up so badly the team decided to skip it entirely. He arrived in the paddock an hour before the race trying to kick everyone in reach. That is not a horse you'd call straightforward. Cowell's own words were that he is "as quirky as they come", and the victory was described as a big team effort precisely because managing this horse is a project in itself.

What is interesting now is where that leaves him heading into this season. Cowell has been open about eyeing the Holyroodhouse Stakes at Royal Ascot as a target — one of the most prestigious occasions in the racing calendar — and has suggested Seven Questions may need a run or two beforehand to find his rhythm. He spent the winter in Dubai, ran well on his first start there, and has returned in good shape. His regular jockey Callum Shepherd has ridden him in 9 of his 28 races, winning once together — a modest 11% conversion rate, about 1 win in every 9 rides, which reflects just how competitive the fields are at this level.

It is now 24 months since his last win, and his recent form reads 4th, 6th, 3rd, 24th, 11th, 7th across his last six races. That 3rd place finish suggests he is not out of ideas, but he has clearly not recaptured his best. At five years old, racing against the top horses in the country week after week, the question hanging over him is whether Ascot might be the occasion that brings out his best again — or whether that remarkable May morning at Newmarket was his peak. Given his temperament, nothing about this horse is ever going to be straightforward.
