The numbers do hint at something, though. Over distances of seven furlongs to a mile, he has won 1 from 9 races — around 1 in every 9, which is notably better than his overall record. And at Class 5, which is where he tends to race, he has won 1 from 4, a much healthier 1 in 4. That suggests he is not completely without ability — he just needs things to line up: the right distance, the right level of competition, and ideally a return to Wolverhampton, the one track where he has shown he can actually get the job done.

His trainer bought him back into the yard believing there was more improvement to come, and spoke in early 2024 about a horse who had not quite come through the winter in the best shape — a little behind where the stronger horses in the string were physically. The hope was that summer racing and a bit more time to fill out and strengthen would unlock a step forward. His recent form — finishing eighth, then a non-completion, sixth, fourth, eleventh, and ninth across his last six races — suggests that step is still being waited on. The fourth-place finish is a flicker of something, but the overall picture is of a horse who is working hard without quite getting there.

At five years old, he is still relatively young and raced just yesterday, so the yard clearly have not given up. Whether there is a breakthrough still in him is the question — but the trainer's instinct that he can improve, combined with his better figures at the right trip and class level, means Serengeti Sunrise is not simply making up the numbers. He just needs one good day to prove it.
