That single outing resulted in an eleventh-place finish, which is a tough debut by any measure, but one race really does tell you almost nothing about a young horse. At two years old, plenty of future stars have looked ordinary on their first day out. What matters now is what comes next.
Slattery's yard is clearly in good form, having sent out 62 winners already this season — that is a serious number, and it means September Duke is at least in capable hands. Whether this horse turns out to be one of the yard's success stories remains to be seen, but with the yard clearly willing to keep it busy, the story is only just beginning.
