Selective Power

The horse's last victory came at Roscommon on 1 September 2025, which is now a full year in the past. Since that win, Selective Power has managed only one place finish from six consecutive races—a fourth in the most recent outing, just a day ago. This is a horse in a lean spell. Its form earlier in life was better: it broke through for a first win at Dundalk on 30 November 2022, and clearly had winning form in it at one point, but that consistency has dried up over the past year.

James Ryan has been the regular rider, piloting Selective Power 11 times and winning twice—a win rate of roughly 1 in 5 when the two are paired together, which is better than the horse's overall record. That partnership has worked reasonably well, even if recent runs have not produced results. At seven years old, with a year since its last win and form that has stalled, Selective Power is the kind of horse racing fans know well: honest, hardworking, and capable on its day, but no longer finding the winner's enclosure regularly. It is still competing, still being given chances, and that last fourth-place finish suggests it has not lost all ability—but the wins, for now, feel like they belong to the past.
