Selective Power

The career began to take shape at Dundalk in late November 2022, when Selective Power landed its first win. Dundalk is an all-weather track that races year-round, and breaking through there can be tricky — it attracts consistent, experienced horses. That first success took time to come but signalled the horse was capable of getting the job done. The most recent win came at Roscommon on 1 September 2025, which at this point is eight months ago, and the six runs since then have been a frustrating read: finishing 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 4th, and 9th in that order. Nothing alarming enough to suggest the horse is broken, but nothing encouraging either.

The most productive partnership in its career has been with jockey James Ryan, who has ridden Selective Power in 10 races and won 2 of them — a win rate of 20%, or 1 in every 5 rides together. That is notably better than the horse's overall record, and it suggests there is something in the combination worth watching. Thomas Coyle's yard has sent out 2 winners this season, so this is a small, quiet operation rather than a powerhouse stable — which makes every winner feel earned.

Selective Power raced just yesterday and remains active, so the search for a fifth career win is very much ongoing. At 7 years old, the horse is experienced enough to know what is expected but still young enough to find another day out. The form of late has been poor, and patience is clearly required — but with the right conditions and James Ryan in the saddle, there is at least a version of events where this horse surprises a few people.
