Secret Rock

His recent form, though, tells a grimmer story. In his last six races, Secret Rock has managed only a single third-place finish at Kilbeggan in late May, two months ago, which doubled as his most recent win. Since then he has drifted back into the pack, running ninth, tenth, and tenth again in his last three outings — the sort of form that leaves a horse looking for better ground and a softer track to get competitive again. Jockey Ben Coen, who has ridden him six times, has won once aboard him (17%), suggesting they are not a perfect match, though consistency in partnerships can sometimes count for more than raw statistics.

At seven years old, Secret Rock is no spring chicken, and his recent decline may simply reflect the hard miles catching up with him. Still, on softer ground over distance, he remains capable of finding a race where his limitations matter less than his preferences. The Navan yard has been sending winners out regularly this season — twenty already — so the stable infrastructure is clearly working. Secret Rock just needs conditions to align: wet ground, a distance in the mile-and-three-quarters to two-mile range, and perhaps a step down in class to remind himself what winning feels like.
