Seagolazo

That sole victory came at Chester in July 2024, now 22 months ago, and it remains the high point of a career that has otherwise been defined by near-misses rather than breakthroughs. Five places from those 15 races show a horse that is competitive and consistent enough to keep finishing in the mix, but one that has repeatedly found a rival or two too good on the day. The most recent six runs — finishing sixth, fourth, sixth, third, fourth, and tenth — paint a similar picture: always around the action, rarely at the front of it.

Where things get genuinely interesting is the quote from trainer Hugo Palmer, who runs a busy yard in Malpas, Cheshire, having sent out 66 winners this season alone. Palmer points to a run at Doncaster last September as a key moment — Seagolazo finished not far behind a horse called Camille Pissarro, who went on to win the Lagardere, one of the most prestigious juvenile races in Europe. That kind of form line is worth sitting up for. It suggests that on his best day, this horse is operating at a level far higher than his win record implies.

Palmer also notes that Seagolazo has physically strengthened over winter and is being aimed at the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot — a highly competitive race over a mile that draws some of the best horses in the country. It's a bold target, but it makes sense. Seagolazo has won 1 from 6 races at distances between seven furlongs and a mile, a 17% win rate, and Chester — where his only career win came — is one of the more unusual tracks in Britain, tight and turning. Ascot is a very different test, but the ambition tells you Palmer believes there is more to come from this horse.

Whether Seagolazo can finally translate that underlying ability into a win at the biggest level remains the question. The potential has been glimpsed. Now it needs to be delivered.
