Trained by Hayley Burton out of Newmarket — the heartland of British flat racing — Sea Of Sardinia is at least in the right place to develop. Burton's yard has sent out 6 winners already this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get a horse ready to win. The question is whether Sea Of Sardinia can translate that stable form into something on the track. Having raced just yesterday, this is a horse very much in the middle of its story rather than at the end of it.
At two years old, there is every reason to stay patient. Some horses take time to figure out what racing is actually about, and a pair of mid-field finishes doesn't close any doors at this stage of a career. Whether Burton finds a softer opportunity to get Sea Of Sardinia's head in front, or keeps stepping it up in search of the right conditions, the next few months will tell us a lot more about what this young horse might become.
