What makes this worth watching rather than writing off is the team behind the horse. Tom Clover's yard at Newmarket is one of the sharper operations in British racing, and this season alone they have sent out 23 winners — that is a genuinely productive yard, and horses trained there tend to be placed with purpose. Newmarket itself is one of the great racing towns, home to dozens of trainers and thousands of horses, and having a base there puts Sea Mehalah Run among serious company in terms of preparation and expertise.

The other thing to hold onto is that this horse raced just one day ago and is still only 3 years old. At that age, horses are still learning what racing is — how to settle, how to respond when asked for effort, how to handle a field of rivals around them. Some horses take half a dozen races just to work out what is expected of them. Sea Mehalah Run has had four. That is not a long education. The honest assessment is that nothing in the record so far suggests a horse on the verge of winning, but nothing rules out improvement either, and the backing of a yard with 23 winners this season means the opportunity will come.
