Trained by Mark Michael McNiff out of Strandhill in County Sligo, Scottish Reel is part of a small yard that has punched out five winners this season — so the operation clearly knows how to get a horse to the front. The fact that Scottish Reel hasn't been among those winners yet is simply how racing goes sometimes. Some horses take time to find their moment, and McNiff's team will be hoping that moment comes soon.
What makes the recent form slightly concerning is the direction of travel. Looking at the last six runs in reverse order — fifth, seventh, fourth, tenth, then two blanks — there's a pattern of fading rather than improving. The fourth-place finish stands out as the closest brush with success in that sequence, but since then the performances have drifted rather than clicked into gear. Scottish Reel has been raced as recently as yesterday, so the yard are clearly keeping the horse active and looking for opportunities. Most of its racing has come at Class 5 level, the entry-level tier of British racing, where it has gone 0 from 5. At some point, a first win at that level has to be the realistic target.
