That win at Doncaster on 13 December 2024 was Sauce Of Life's first career victory, and by the sound of it, it was worth waiting for. Jockey Danny McMenamin, speaking afterwards on Sky Sports Racing, described a horse who simply needed longer than most to shift through the gears — but once he did, the race was settled. McMenamin knows this horse well, having ridden him in 5 of his 7 races, winning 1 of those — a rate of roughly 1 in 5 together, which is meaningfully better than his overall average and suggests the partnership suits him.

Trainer Nicky Richards, whose Greystoke yard in Cumbria has sent out 39 winners this season alone, spotted the raw ability early but also identified the challenge. After an early run over hurdles at Wetherby, Richards noted that a slow pace had turned the race into a sprint finish, which caught Sauce Of Life completely off guard — a horse who needs time to build into his stride simply cannot be asked to find another gear in an instant. It was a learning experience rather than a failure, and Richards was confident at the time that wins would come. It just took a little longer than expected.

Now returning from a break of around six months — his last race was that Doncaster win — Sauce Of Life comes back with a clean slate and something to build on. At Class 4 level, where he has competed most often, he has won 1 from 4 races, a rate of 1 in 4, which is a respectable record at his usual grade. At 11 years old he is no youngster, but horses who take time to mature often retain their form well once they find their level. The question is whether a long absence sharpens him or takes the edge off — and given what we know about how he races, the first chance to get the engine running again will be worth watching closely.
