Richards, who operates out of Greystoke in Cumbria and has already sent out 39 winners this season, had Saracen Beau pegged early as a horse that needed time and space to develop. Rather than rushing him into easier races, Richards pointed him straight over hurdles to learn his trade — the logic being that a big, galloping type would benefit more from experience than from collecting a win against weak opposition. That read on the horse looks smart in hindsight.

The record now shows two wins, the first coming at Ayr in November 2024 and the most recent at Doncaster in March 2026 — just eight weeks ago. What ties those wins together is the ground: both came on slightly soft conditions, and across his three races on that kind of surface, Saracen Beau has won twice, a 67% win rate that is frankly striking. Win 2 from 3 on a specific type of ground and you start to suspect it is not a coincidence — there is something about that bit of moisture underfoot that brings out the best in him. On faster or more normal ground, the wins dry up.

His recent form reads as a win, two thirds and a second from his last four completed starts, which paints the picture of a horse in good nick and running consistently well without always getting his nose in front. He raced just yesterday, so the team are clearly keeping him busy during what looks like a productive spell.

At seven, Saracen Beau is in the prime years of a jump racing career. He knows his job, he has a trainer who understands him, and when the ground comes up soft, he becomes a horse worth watching very closely.
