The recent form makes for difficult reading. Finishing tenth, then fourteenth, then fourth, then fifth — there is at least a suggestion of improvement in those last two efforts, even if a win remains elusive. A fourth-place finish means Sands Castle has come close to getting on the board, but in racing, prize money and recognition go to the first three home, so it counts for little on paper.
Sands Castle is trained by Adrian Sexton, based out of Athy in County Kildare. It is a small yard by most measures — two winners from the current season — which means every runner matters and every good run is noticed. For an operation of that size, placing a young horse right and being patient with its development is often the name of the game. Sands Castle has had four chances to break through and has not managed it yet, but with yesterday's race still fresh, there is clearly no shortage of enthusiasm from the team about keeping this horse active and looking for the right opportunity.
At three, there is still time. Some horses take a while to figure out what racing is actually about, and the step from fourth to a winner's enclosure can sometimes happen quickly once things click. Whether Sands Castle is one of those, only the next few races will tell.
