Saint Peregrine

The recent form makes for uncomfortable viewing. A pulled-up run, a seventh, a third, a ninth, and another pulled-up — that sequence, combined with a four-month break since last racing, raises questions about where things stand. The third place is the one flicker of promise in there, a reminder that on the right day Saint Peregrine can finish close to the action. But the pulled-up efforts either side of it suggest inconsistency at best.

Jockey Liam McKenna has stuck with the horse through five of those races and has yet to get the best out of it — or perhaps the horse simply hasn't offered it. Five attempts, no wins between them. That's a partnership still searching for its moment.

What works in Saint Peregrine's favour is the yard behind it. Trainer John Patrick Ryan, operating out of Templemore in County Tipperary, has sent out 23 winners already this season — a figure that speaks to a functioning, competitive operation that knows how to get horses to win races. Ryan clearly has the ability to find opportunities for his horses, and the fact that Saint Peregrine remains in training suggests the team believes there is still something to work with here. The four-month break may well have been purposeful — a reset, a chance to come back fresh.

Whether freshness translates to a first win remains to be seen. Saint Peregrine returns to racing as one of those horses that neutral observers tend to watch with a mix of sympathy and curiosity — old enough to know its job, experienced enough to have learned the track, but still chasing the moment everything clicks. In a yard producing winners at a decent rate, the hope will be that the patience eventually pays off.
