What is worth paying attention to, though, is who is doing the writing. Trainer James Owen operates out of Newmarket — the heartland of British flat racing — and has sent out 204 winners this season alone. That is a yard firing on all cylinders, and when a team of that size and quality puts a young horse on the track, they tend to know what they have and where it is headed. A seventh-place finish first time out for a 2-year-old is far from unusual; plenty of good horses need that first run simply to learn what racing is about before they start showing their real ability.
Sahara Lake is one to watch rather than one to judge. The debut is done, the experience is banked, and with a trainer who clearly knows how to place and develop horses, the next run will tell us considerably more.
