Run Baby Run

The level Run Baby Run competes at is Class 4, which sits in the lower half of the British racing ladder — not the easiest races in the world, but not the toughest either. Going winless from five races at that level is a difficult statistic to dress up. A horse that cannot win or even place at this grade has a lot of ground to make up before anyone would confidently back it.

Trainer R Mike Smith, based in Galston in East Ayrshire, has had a productive season with 25 winners sent out from the yard — so the operation clearly knows how to get horses winning. The puzzle is why Run Baby Run, who raced just one day ago and remains in active training, hasn't been able to convert any of those lessons into a result. Sometimes a horse simply takes time to click, and sometimes the right race on the right day changes everything. But on the evidence available, patience is the only thing Run Baby Run has asked of anyone connected to it. Whether that patience eventually gets rewarded is the only real question left to answer.
