At Newmarket, where top-class racing congregates, Rumstar has won two of his three races there—an almost freakish win rate at the sport's most demanding venue. On normal ground conditions, he wins roughly one in every three races (2 wins from 6), suggesting he has strong preferences about what underfoot suits him best. Rob Hornby, his regular jockey, has ridden him in 16 races and won on him four times (25 per cent), a partnership that seems to click; Portman himself has spoken about how Hornby reads the race tactically, finding gaps others miss and knowing the horse's temperament inside out.

Recent form tells a story of a horse that remains competitive but fragile. His last six races show a third-place finish, a second, another second, a distant 25th-place finish, a second again, and a sixth. That cluster of places—three seconds in six races—shows he is running well but not quite getting over the line often enough. Portman has hinted at the problem in public: at Haydock, Rumstar did not enjoy the experience; at Royal Ascot, he got in front too early and then faded; at Sandown, though, everything aligned—the draw, the pace, Hornby's ride—and he won. For a horse like this, operating at the highest level with a narrow margin between winning and losing, everything has to go just right. The trainer is also experimenting with fresh targets, including attempting a Group 1 at York, suggesting he sees untapped potential in a horse that now looks heavier and stronger than in previous seasons.
