Royal Rhythm

The highlights of the career are worth picking out. Royal Rhythm broke through at Galway in October 2022, and the most recent win came at Wetherby on Boxing Day 2023 — one of the most atmospheric days in the entire racing calendar. That is now 29 months without a win, and the last six races have produced two second places followed by three fifths and a gap in the record, which suggests a horse that gets into contention without quite finding the extra gear needed at the finish.

Where Royal Rhythm genuinely comes alive is in wet, muddy conditions. On that kind of ground, the record reads two wins from nine races — roughly one in every four or five — which is a meaningful jump from its overall win rate of about one in every nine. That is not a coincidence; that is a horse with a real preference, and it tells you that on a proper winter day with the ground churned up, Royal Rhythm is worth taking seriously.

The trainer Jonjo O'Neill, working alongside his son A J, runs a yard that has sent out 52 winners this season, so there is clearly no shortage of talent and organisation in that operation. The puzzle is the partnership with jockey Benjamin Macey, who has ridden Royal Rhythm nine times without a win between them. Nine races is a reasonable sample, and a 0% win rate together does raise a quiet question about whether a change in the saddle might unlock something.

Royal Rhythm raced just yesterday, so it is firmly in the middle of its campaign. At Class 4, which is a solid mid-tier level of competition, it wins roughly 1 in every 12 races at that grade. A horse this experienced, trained by people who clearly know what they are doing, and with a genuine love of the mud — another wet winter day at the right track could yet bring the clock back to life.
