The most recent win came at Dundalk in July 2024, now nearly 22 months ago, and the six races since have produced nothing better than an eighth-place finish. That recent form — finishing outside the top ten in five of the last six completed races — tells a story of a horse that is finding it harder to land a blow. The dash in the middle of that sequence suggests a race was missed entirely, which at this stage of a career is worth noting.

What makes the current situation a little puzzling is where Rough Diamond is competing. Class 5 is the lower end of the racing ladder, and yet the horse has gone 0 from 7 at that level. You would expect a horse with its experience to be competitive at that grade, and the fact it has not managed a single win there raises a genuine question about where its best days now sit.

Jockey Sorcha Woods has ridden Rough Diamond six times without a win between them, though it would be unfair to read too much into that — the partnership simply has not clicked yet, and the horse's overall form in that same window has been modest regardless of who was riding.

Rough Diamond opened its account at Naas back in May 2022, and that first win feels like a long time ago now. It is still racing — it ran just one day ago — and that appetite to compete at nine years old is genuinely admirable. But the numbers are honest: this is a horse searching for a moment that has proved elusive for nearly two years.
