That one win came at Lingfield Park on 13 September 2025, and it remains the high point of his career so far. Lingfield is a track with a distinctive artificial surface and a tight, turning layout that suits some horses far better than others, so it is worth watching whether the yard send him back there looking to repeat the trick. Seven months have passed since that day, and his recent form makes for sobering reading: two finishes outside the top five either side of a placed effort, suggesting a horse that blows hot and cold.
The level he has been asked to compete at may be part of the story. In his three races at Class 4 — a competitive middle tier where most of British racing's everyday action happens — he has yet to win, suggesting that grade might be asking just a little too much of him at this stage. His best days so far have come when the opportunity has been sized right.
He is trained by Richard Spencer, who operates out of Newmarket, the spiritual home of British racing and a town where the pressure to perform is baked into the very air. Spencer's yard has sent out 27 winners already this season, which speaks to an operation that knows how to place a horse in a race it can win. For Romeo Montague, finding that race again — ideally back at Lingfield — is the task at hand. He raced as recently as 30 days ago, so the team is clearly keeping him active and searching for the right opportunity.
At three years old, there is time for the picture to sharpen. Horses at this age are still developing, and a yard as productive as Spencer's will not have given up on him. Whether he is a horse with one good day behind him or one with more to come is genuinely the interesting question.
