For a horse who manages just 1 win in 15 across all conditions, finding that kind of preference is useful information. His trainer will know to pick those spots carefully.

His regular partner in the saddle is Leigh Roche, who has ridden him 23 times — nearly half his career — and managed just the 1 win together, a 4% record that mirrors the horse's general level. O'Callaghan's yard has been in decent form this season with 21 winners, so the operation knows how to get horses ready to run well. Rockbury Lad is simply a horse operating near the ceiling of what he can do, a consistent competitor at a modest level who turns up race after race and gives his honest best. Sometimes that is enough. Sometimes it is not.
